Are you passionate about sports and committed to making a positive impact on the lives of children with additional needs? We are excited to offer a rewarding opportunity for a skilled sports mentor/teaching assistant to join our team at a respected local school. In this role, you will play a key part in helping children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), develop confidence, social skills, and a love for physical activity.
The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, therapists, and specialists to support the personal and educational growth of students with additional needs, creating a safe and supportive environment where every child can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with class teachers in developing and implementing tailored sports programs that meet the unique needs, abilities, and interests of each child.
  • Provide individualised attention to students, helping them navigate challenges in learning and physical activity by offering patience, understanding, and encouragement.
  • Foster personal, social, and educational growth through activities that promote confidence, teamwork, and emotional resilience, while maintaining clear communication with students.
  • Monitor and assess students' progress, and contribute to personalised plans by offering regular feedback to teachers, therapists, and other support staff.
  • Create an inclusive, structured, and positive environment where students feel inspired, respected, and able to express themselves through physical activities.
  • Assist in managing challenging behaviours with a calm, consistent approach, understanding that children with ASD and other additional needs may require time and space to process emotions and information.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive classroom setting, where students can explore their abilities and grow in confidence without fear of judgement.
Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with children with special educational needs, ideally in a sports, educational, or recreational setting.
  • A strong understanding of how individual needs, particularly ASD, may affect learning, social development, and behaviour.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to helping children achieve their full potential, even when progress may be incremental.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to adapt to the unique needs and behaviours of students on a daily basis.
  • A valid and enhanced DBS check.
  • Up-to-date safeguarding training.
Commitment: Working with children who have additional needs, particularly ASD, requires a high level of emotional resilience, flexibility, and dedication. These students may face sensory, social, and communication challenges, which means that patience and consistency are vital. Candidates must be prepared to invest time and energy into building strong, trusting relationships with students, offering tailored support, and celebrating every victory along their learning journeys.

Pay: £90-99 per day PAYE & Holiday Pay.
