About the Role

Are you a passionate Maths tutor or Functional Skills Maths Tutor looking for a role where you can make a genuine impact on young people’s lives?

We’re recruiting for a specialist post-16 education setting in Reading, supporting young people aged 16–25, many of whom have SEND and/or SEMH needs.

You’ll deliver Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 3 through to Level 2, helping learners develop their numeracy, problem-solving and practical maths skills for employment, independence and adult life.

For some young people, Maths is a subject they’ve spent years avoiding. They may have struggled to keep up in lessons, never understood how it relates to everyday life, or lost confidence along the way.

We’re looking for someone who can make Maths practical, accessible and relevant, while building the confidence that helps young people realise they are capable of achieving.

The Role:
  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths lessons from Entry Level 3 to Level 2.
  • Develop learners’ confidence in numeracy, problem-solving and practical mathematical skills.
  • Create accessible and engaging learning activities linked to real-life situations.
  • Differentiate lessons to meet individual learner needs and abilities.
  • Work with learners on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.
  • Prepare learners for Functional Skills Maths qualifications and examinations.
  • Monitor and track learner progress.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to support learners with SEND and SEMH needs.
  • Maintain accurate learner records, assessments and documentation.
  • Contribute to learner reviews, target setting and progression planning.
  • Work closely with Learning Support Assistants and the wider team to support learner achievement.
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Holds a recognised Level 3 teaching qualification or equivalent.
  • Has GCSE English and Maths, or equivalent.
  • Has experience delivering Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 3 to Level 2.
  • Has experience working with young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
  • Has strong lesson planning, assessment and classroom management skills.
  • Can make Maths engaging, practical and relevant.
  • Is confident adapting their teaching to different abilities and learning needs.
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is organised and confident maintaining accurate learner records.
  • Has a calm, patient and positive approach.
  • Enjoys building positive relationships with young people.
Experience within a specialist education, alternative provision, FE or post-16 setting would be particularly beneficial.
About the SettingYou’ll be joining a specialist post-16 education and training provider supporting young people aged 16–25.
The organisation currently supports over 320 young people across several regions, with many learners referred from secondary schools, pupil referral units and specialist education settings.

In Berkshire, learners access a range of vocational programmes including Construction Multiskills, Sports, Boost Workskills, Creative Art & Design, Achieve Lifeskills and Transition, alongside Functional Skills Maths and English.
The setting takes a relational and trauma-informed approach, recognising that every learner has different strengths, needs and barriers to learning.

The aim is to create an environment where young people feel supported, build confidence and develop the skills they need for their next steps.
At Supply Hive, safeguarding is a top priority. All candidates undergo enhanced DBS checks and safeguarding measures to ensure the well-being of students. We offer full assistance to make sure everything is in place before you start.

If you carry out a long-term Class Teacher role with Supply Hive, you will be paid to your MPS.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role as well as the Right to Work in the UK. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
