What does the role involve?
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you’ll be working closely with a small group of pupils who need high levels of personalised support. These students may be non-verbal, have physical or sensory needs, and require assistance with personal care. The focus of your role will be to help them access a sensory-rich curriculum, communicate in ways that suit them, and feel safe, comfortable, and valued throughout the school day.
This role isn’t just about assisting in the classroom – it’s about forming genuine, trusting relationships with pupils who rely on consistency, patience, and a calming presence. You'll work closely with teachers, therapists, and other TAs to ensure each child’s individual learning and care plans are followed.
Responsibilities 📝
- Supporting pupils 1:1 or in small groups with a range of learning and physical needs
- Using communication aids like PECS, switches, or eye gaze (training can be given)
- Assisting with personal care routines including feeding and changing where needed
- Helping to deliver sensory-based activities and engaging pupils through touch, sound, movement and visuals
- Monitoring progress and communicating closely with the class team and families
- Being a consistent and nurturing presence in a child’s daily routine
- Experience supporting children or adults with complex needs (PMLD experience is a bonus but not essential!)
- A calm, empathetic, and flexible approach to working with students
- Comfortable with personal care and supporting medical or physical needs (with training)
- Team-player mindset – ready to muck in and be part of a close-knit staff group
- A willingness to learn and develop – the school offers brilliant training opportunities
